Neighboring Languages and Colonization

This survey received 5 responses from 4 countries: Germany, Norway, United States of America

Question 1 asked The historical patterns of imperialism have, so to speak, placed certain languages at a disadvantage compared to other similar and much more widely spoken languages. The most poignant example right now is Ukrainian and Russian, but other examples are Spanish and Catalan, and Japanese and Okinawan. To what extent should these less spoken languages be given prominence in academic spaces so that they are not overshadowed by their more spoken counterparts? (Thanks to Dr. Michael Denner for inspiring this question.)
